The first thirteen aircraft (R5768-R5780) were destroyed in a bombing raid on the works 23-12-40 and replacement aircraft were added to the end of the production batch. Many aircraft surviving in 1943 had the Merlin XX engines replaced by Merlin XXII's. 1 aircraft converted to Lancaster Ml.VI after leaving Manufacturers.

Avro Type 683 Lancaster: Initial order of four planned prototypes ordered under Contract No.B.135521/40. The first aircraft (BT308) used a Manchester airframe, modified for the installation of four Merlin X engines. The second (DG595) was to be representative of the initial Lancaster Mk.I production model. The third (DT810) had Bristol Hercules VI radial engines installed and became the Lancaster Mk.II prototype airframe. The fourth and final prototype (BT812) was never built.

All aircraft equipped with Packard built Rolls-Royce Merlin 28, 38 or 224 engines. Majority of aircraft shipped to Britain between 3-45 and 5-45, some of which served with RCAF Squadrons in Britain, the majority were back to Canada in 8-45.

Various manufacturing plants were used in the production of the AVRO Manchester and Lancaster Bomber's. Many of the type were in fact built under licence for AVRO by other leading aircraft manufacturers or in the case of the Mark X variant in Canada and then flown to England for operational service.
